Daphne appointed to team of Lamb-assadors for Welsh PGI Lamb

Posted 13/5/2013

Daphne has recently been appointed one of a team of ‘Lamb-assadors’ to sing the praises of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status of Welsh Lamb.  The ‘Lamb-assadors’ have been recruited by Welsh agency Hybu Cig Cymru come from a variety of professions, including farmers, butchers and chefs.  This team of industry experts, including Daphne, will help to promote the unique qualities of Welsh Lamb and the benefits that PGI status gives to producers, suppliers and, of course, consumers.

The ‘Lamb-assadors’ include high profile chefs, Michelin-starred Shaun Hill, Matt Tebbutt, Angela Gray and the UK’s youngest head chef, Luke Thomas, award winning master butchers Clinton Roberts of Pontardawe and Rob Rattray of Aberystwyth, with Welsh Lamb farmers Daphne Tilley and Myrddin Davies completing the team.

The ambassadors for Lamb will take part in events across the country and in the media to explain the qualities that have earned Welsh Lamb PGI status from the European Commission.  The PGI scheme certifies traceability assuring butchers and chefs that they are providing customers with a genuine product. PGI means that only sheep born and reared in Wales and processed in a HCC-approved abattoir can be labelled as ‘Welsh’.

“Our ‘Lamb-assadors’ will be help celebrate the fact that Welsh Lamb has been recognised as having regional importance and to educate people about the significance of the status, which protects Welsh Lamb against imitation by other products.” says Philippa Gill, HCC’s Brand Marketing Officer. Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) is the industry-led organisation responsible for the development, promotion and marketing of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status of Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef.
